The writer Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) was a member of the Academie Française, a historian, archaeologist and inspector of historical monuments. He undertakes the restoration of the Basilica of Vézelay with his friend the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. He wrote, “When I was drawing in the church, I could hear small stones coming loose and falling all around me… It is clear that there is no part of this monument that does not need repairing… The town of Vézelay is poor and has no industry, being in an inaccessible position away from the main roads.”
