The French writer Romain Rolland (1866-1944) received the Nobel Prize in 1915 for his “Jean-Christophe” novels; he also published works on musicology, history and philosophy. On the Colline Eternelle (“Eternal Hill”), he wrote, “We must bless ingratitude, which has forgotten this corner of the world, where the calm of nature and the serenity of the “poverello” reign.”
