Georges Bataille (1897-1962), French writer, stayed in Vézelay from 1943. He founded the “Critique” journal, and frequented the intellectual circle of the time which included names such as Giacometti, Balthus, Merleau-Ponty, and Max-Pol Fouchet. He writes : “ He wrote, “I would say that what I am most proud of is that I have combined the most turbulent, shocking and outrageous way of laughing with the most profound religious spirit.” ”.
