Henri Petit (1900-1978), born in Avallon, was the first writer to stay in Vézelay. A philosopher and literary critic, he published “Vézelay” in 1927. He wrote, “This stone image, this immobile image of the holy madness of spirits, of movement in its most powerful activity, is the inner life, the illumination of silence.”
